Jimmy Guiffre Memorial Concert: NEC Jazz Orchestra

NEC honors saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre, who died on April 24. Giuffre, who performed with virtually all of the jazz greats, and toured with his own ensemble beginning in 1956, taught and coached jazz ensembles at NEC from 1978 through 1994.

Tonight’s concert will feature many of Giuffre’s most well known pieces, including Four Brothers, The Train and the River, as well as many of his lesser known compositions. Full repertoire also includes Sad Truth, Your Money, Frog Legs, Phoenix, Squirrels, Life Music, Movement IV, Palo Alto, Cork ‘N’ Bib, and Dragonfly.

Performers will include NEC students and faculty, in addition to Giuffre’s former students and colleagues. Ran Blake will perform one of Giuffre’s favorite tunes, Gordon Jenkins‘s Goodbye. The NEC Jazz Orchestra will perform Four Brothers and Dragonfly, under the direction of Ken Schaphorst. Other featured performers include Frank Carlberg, Allan Chase, Bob Nieske, Pete Levin, and Daniel Ian Smith.
